In terms of achievement, Gracie Gold had it all: Olympic medal, world championships, beloved celebrity at the pinnacle of an incredibly competitive and difficult field. She even became friends with Taylor Swift. Unfortunately, in terms of mental health problems, she also had it all: eating disorders, body dysmorphia, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, ADHD, and OCD. Despite those challenges, her career required dressing up in glamorous outfits and perfect hair and makeup and going out to skate under the spotlights and be judged. It all got to be too much and Gracie fell apart, finally got treatment, and began a long road to recovery. She had planned to tour with and eventually record an album with her band, the punk outfit Against Me! Three days into a three week stint on the road, the band's tour was canceled and everyone was sent home. With several dozen songs already written and a lot more time on her hands, Laura recorded Stay Alive, a solo acoustic album with a stripped down, folkier feel than your typical punk fare. A lot of the album's power comes from the feeling that it's struck just the right emotional chord for that time. There's usually just an acoustic guitar, sometimes a drum machine, and Laura's voice: powerful, passionate and vulnerable. Laura's latest solo efforts dropped last month, that album is called Hole in my Head. Her solo music isn't exactly what you'd expect to hear from the lead singer of Against Me! – maybe more like the Mountain Goats or Neutral Milk Hotel. It's music from a singer who is confident enough to let her writing speak for itself. When Laura joined us a few years ago she talked with correspondent Jordan Morris about her early days playing shows in a laundromat, her love of Guns N' Roses, and what it's like to record an album while in quarantine. Bob Edwards was a radio legend and a pioneer of public radio. Edwards joined NPR in 1974. That same year, he became a co-host of All Things Considered, the public broadcaster’s signature evening newsmagazine. The program’s success led to the spinoff Morning Edition in 1979 where Bob became the show’s first host–a position he held for nearly 25 years. In that time he won a Peabody award and was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. We’re taking a moment to remember the life of the legendary radio host. Jesse Thorn spoke with Bob when the show was called The Sound of Young America. The show was taped at KZSC at University of California, Santa Cruz. In 2007, Bob Edwards graced the studios of KZSC to explain why he stuck with public radio for decades and revealed what NPR was like at the very, very beginning.

Kari Faux is an acclaimed rapper originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, which is a place she returned to after several years of not loving life in Los Angeles. She later judged her situation and decided things would be better living in Houston so she moved there. These decisions are examples of the thoughtful approach she takes to a lot of issues in her life, including how to deal with a family member at the center of a problematic relationship. Kari details the boundaries she has set and the efforts she has put in to create and maintain a good place for herself. She also discusses her interest in getting to a psychiatrist and the fears she has about that.

His sound is less Tim McGraw and George Strait western music, and more like John Prine, David Allan Coe western music. There's slide guitar, there's drawl but under a lot of it a sense of humor that's dark and biting. Corb Lund is a native of Alberta, Canada. He grew up working the ranches there. Corb has been recording music for almost the last two decades. His most recent record is called El Viejo. Like his earlier work, it's clever, plain spoken and beautifully produced. The title of the album is a reference to Ian Tyson. Tyson was an Alberta legend - as half of the folk duo Ian and Sylvia, and as a western music solo star. He was also a friend and mentor to Corb. When Jesse first talked to Lund, back in 2010, it was at a folk festival up in Calgary. Now, he joins us in the studio with his guitar and everything. Corb joins us to talk about the new album, growing up in Calgary, and even plays a few songs for us.

The exhibit compiles her nearly four decades of work – her breathtaking photographs of queer and fetish communities, her street photography in Los Angeles, her portraits of surfers, her friends and families. Catherine joins us to talk about the retrospective exhibit and some of her most well known and important works. It was 2003 and Paul Gilmartin, one time host of TV’s Dinner and a Movie, was presented with an ultimatum by his psychiatrist: either do something to address your alcohol and drug addiction or I can’t really work with you anymore. Besides substance use issues, Paul had been dealing with intense suicidal ideation, major depressive disorder and the trauma of an alcoholic father and a mother engaged in covert incest. He was a mess. Finally, he reached out to support groups for his issues and broke down crying for the entire first meeting he attended. What followed was a journey to something better. Hear how he got sober, got treatment, and went on to help other people through openness and vulnerability. Hear also the rather rigorous steps Paul must follow every day to stay healthy. Sacha Jenkins is himself a hip-hop veteran. He was one of the founders of the legendary magazine Ego Trip and the creative director of Mass Appeal magazine. He’s directed a number of films, including documentaries about the Wu-Tang Clan, Rick James, and Louie Armstrong. His new project, All Up In The Biz, documents the life and legacy of rapper Biz Markie. Most people, if they know who Biz Markie was, know him from his song “Just A Friend.” But within hip-hop, Biz Markie was much more than a successful hit single. He was an avatar for everything delightful about the culture, as a rapper, beatboxer, and person. His very way of being in the world reminded everyone around him how fun hip-hop could be. She has an impeccable fashion sense and makes waves in that world. She got her start as a model. Then, Chloë appeared in music videos for bands like Sonic Youth and The Lemonheads. Then as an actor in arthouse movies – her debut was in Larry Clark's pioneering movie Kids. And she went on to bigger things: an Oscar nominated role Boys Don't Cry, indie films like The Last Days of Disco and Broken Flowers. Regular roles on shows like Big Love and American Horror Story, too. We were big fans of her recurring appearances as Alexandra on Portlandia. Her latest project is Feud: Capote vs the Swans. It's a TV mini-series based on the real life feud Truman Capote had with a group of New York Socialites - the Swans. Sevigny plays C.Z. Guest - an actress, author and one of the Swans. When we talked to Chloë in 2022, she'd just starred in The Girl from Plainville. It’s a TV drama series inspired by the so called "texting suicide case." Conrad Roy III 18 years old when he died by suicide in 2014. Roy's girlfriend, then 17 year old Michelle Carter, was charged and later convicted in connection to his death. The series explores the events leading up to Roy's death, and the relationship Conrad and Michelle shared. In the show, Chloë portrays Conrad's mother Lynn. Chloë talks with Jesse about being a cool teen and keeping it cool after all these years. We'll also geek out with Chloë about her making own clothes. Truly a fashion icon! She's been performing professionally for over thirty years now and has recorded albums spanning folk, rap, rock, blues, you name it. Just a few weeks ago, she earned a Grammy for Best Alternative Jazz Album. The Omnichord Real Book isn't really jazz, though. It's sort of genre-less. It touches on neo soul, funk, afrobeat, hip-hop and experimental music. It's also unmistakable, one hundred percent Meshell Ndegeocello. When Meshell joined us on Bullseye back in 2009, she'd recently released her album The World Has Made Me The Man of My Dreams. She talked with us about the album, coming up in DC’s go-go scene, imagining the sound of the bass and more. This interview originally aired in January of 2009.

During a decades long career in the United States Army, Gregg Martin just kept on succeeding. Star cadet at West Point, getting promoted up to two-start General, earning PhD degrees along the way, and receiving glowing evaluations all the while for his boundless energy and enthusiasm. He now knows that he was operating under a condition called hyperthymia, being in a constant state of near mania. After a deployment to Iraq, Gregg’s mania kicked into high gear and was accompanied by bouts of deep depression. It would take many years of further promotion and misdiagnosis before Gregg’s behavior became so erratic that his life fell apart and his bipolar disorder was finally identified. Then he had to figure out how to get better. He tells his story in this interview and in his book Bipolar General: My Forever War with Mental Illness.
